Following body-shaming on the social media, Gigi Hadid has made a shocking revelation recently. The supermodel revealed she has been secretly battling with a disease for years, which is what has made her body changed.
The leggy blonde was recently being attacked by rampant body shamers who tried to take her down by criticizing the way she looks, commenting on how she was ‘too chubby’ and now she is ‘too skinny’.
In a series of tweets, Gigi revealed that her body has changed over the years because she suffers Hashimoto’s Disease.
Hashimoto’s is a condition that causes a serious swelling of the thyroid gland, resulting in unexpected and fast weight gain and weight loss, fatigue and dry skin.
Gigi used to come under fire for being “too big” for the catwalk when she started modeling. At the time, she was 17 and suffering from the thyroid condition. Recently, body shamers have taken another angle: they have been calling her too skinny.
The constant weight gain and loss is another symptom of Hadid’s condition, something she emphatically pointed out to her haters.
Hashimoto’s disease affects about 14 million people in the US. However, experts are unclear about the exact cause of the condition. Essentially, the disease causes the immune system to react abnormally. The body begins to produce antibodies that damage the butterfly shaped thyroid gland; this produces hormones that are responsible for regulation of the body’s metabolic rate.
These hormones also regulate muscle control, heart and digestive function and other processes. When this system suffers a breakdown, the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones, causing sporadic weight gain, puffy face and muscle weakness.
Gigi was first signed as a model five years ago. It was during her stint at IMG that she discovered her underlying condition.
“When I started [at] 17, I was not yet diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease,” she tweeted.
“Those of [you] who called me ‘too big for the industry’ were seeing inflammation and water retention due to that.”
She was criticized by haters for being too fat and heavy to model. The model also gave an interview to Daily Mail, where she opened up about her past eating habits.
The stunning supermodel said that she “eats like a man” and apparently grew up with “huge thighs”.
Despite all the body drama, Gigi has relentlessly stayed positive. She has shut down haters a number of times and continues to make her way to the top of the fashion world.
