Taimei Elementary School located in Ginza, Tokyo, has been facing a lot of criticism for switching to the new uniform designed by Armani, worth ¥80,000, which is around $730!

The school announced this latest change on their website on November 17, 2017. It was disclosed in a document named ‘About New Standard Clothing’.

In the document, principal Toshiji Wada explained that this change was needed because the city of Ginzo is progressing rapidly, and the elementary school needs to be ‘a landmark’.

“I am not concerned about the brand, I am not interested, but Yasuaki Elementary School is also a Ginza landmark, Ginza brand. It is a kind of traditional brand that exists with the history of the city,” he wrote.

Ginza is preparing itself for Olympics 2020 in Tokyo. The area has seen some major development over the past few years and has started to become a status symbol for many. Principal Toshiji explained the same very thing in the document.

He further said, “By the way, the city of Ginza is transforming toward the 2020 Tokyo Olympics for the foreseeable future. While keeping the remnant of the good old Ginza, I am seeking newness. Yao Ming primary school too. “

“While keeping a good tradition, we are promoting educational activities that have timely flow. As you know, in the city of Ginza, brand shops named around the world line up,” the principal continued to say.

In Japan, most public schools do not require students to wear uniforms. However, the tuition fee is extremely high and some parents can barely afford it. Now, making an extremely expensive uniform compulsory has left parents fuming.

The decision to switch to Armani uniform was also brought up in the parliament on Thursday.

Japanese politician, Manabu Terata, said:

“School uniforms are already more expensive than the business suits we wear, but these uniforms at Taimei Elementary School are especially questionable.”

Parents and the law makers are getting in touch with the school to rethink this policy calling it extremely unfair.

The principal of the school has welcomed the criticism but is adamant on introducing Armani as their school dress code. The new uniform policy will be applicable from April.
